Colin Garvin Duo

Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club opened their new season with a large number of members and friends assembled in their usual venue of the Royal Hotel in Portree eagerly anticipating an evening of fine music and they were not to be disappointed despite the poor turnout of local musicians. It was Club chairman, Aly ‘K’ MacPherson on accordion accompanied on piano by visiting bandleader Colin Garvin who got the feet tapping with some lively sets to be followed by solo fiddler Julia Rudram. Back to the accordion and it was the very talented Emily Matheson of Staffin who put on a wonderful performance with piano backing from Colin Garvin. Final local musician was Wendy Riva of Kilmuir with her solo fiddle selections, as always played impeccably, and finishing her contribution with a classical piece. The remainder of the evening was devoted to the wonderful music of the Club’s special guest band, The Colin Garvin Duo. Bandleader Colin, who is based in Livingston and this time leading on accordion, was making a welcome return to the Club and accompanied on drums by Inverness based George Bremner who is also no stranger to the Club. This experienced duo delighted the appreciative audience with their fine playing of traditional Scottish music, played to the highest standard, with variety from pipe tunes, jigs, reels and Gaelic waltzes. One of the highlights of their programme was a beautiful arrangement of the slow air, The Bays Of Harris, always a favourite with the island audience. All too soon the evening came to a close leaving the happy audience heading homewards looking forward to their next Club night on 2nd November when special guests will be Nicol McLaren and The Glencraig Scottish Dance Band.
