James Stewart Trio

Members and friends of Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club gathered at their usual venue of Portree’s Royal Hotel for their February meeting to be welcomed by m.c. Jim Campbell who invited accordionist Emily Matheson to get the music underway. Several toe tapping sets from Emily were followed by a very competent contribution from the fiddle of eight year old Tilly Ng. Self taught fiddler Julia Rudram played several sets, including a tribute to Robert Burn, and later in the evening Kathleen MacDonald also played a fiddle set. The audience were pleased to welcome a trio of musicians who had travelled from the south end of Skye to visit the Club and contribute to the entertainment. They were accordionists Eilidh MacFadyen of Tiree, Radachan Mackinnon of Sleat and fiddler Donald ‘Doc’ Livingston of Breakish with great lively playing as a trio and later in the evening Eilidh and Donald returned to the stage with some superb accordion and fiddle duets. Unfortunately the guest band originally scheduled in the Club diary cancelled their visit to Skye but, at quite short notice, the Club were delighted to be able to obtain the services of popular local band, The James Stewart Trio, to fill the guest spot. It had been some time since this trio had guested at the Club but it was obvious from the outset that they had lost none of their magic as they launched into a fabulous programme of jigs, reels, marches, hornpipes and waltzes, all played by ear. What a lively performance, played to the highest standard to delight the appreciative audience. The trio consisted of James Stewart on piano accordion with midi, his father, Sam on second box and last, but by no means least, drummer Donald John Campbell. A wonderful evening of music drew to a close with all the musicians joining the trio for a traditional “stramash”. On 1st March the Club will welcome The Sileas Sinclair Trio as their special guest.

John Grundy.
